Sacred Reminder

During His final Passover before the crucifixion, Jesus Christ gave this command in Luke 22:19: “Do this in remembrance of me.” It’s in the narrative of the bread and cup that we are reminded of Christ’s broken body and shed blood to redeem us from sin. Each commemoration is powerful and brings us back to the cross where our forgiveness was purchased by the blood of Jesus.
There is great diversity among Protestant churches, and many have their own theology and practice of Communion. Many of these changes came about as a result of the Reformation.
Communal Bond

This becomes a turning point for many, a moment to let go of burdens, confess sins, and realign with God’s purposes. In this way communion acts as a personal reset. It’s a quiet and powerful invitation to start refreshed by God’s mercy.

Taste of the Kingdom to Come
Communion pushes forward as well as backward. We not only remember Christ’s death but also we anticipate His return. Jesus said He would not drink of the fruit of the vine again until He did so in His Father’s kingdom (Matthew 26:29). Every communion celebration is thus a foretaste of the heavenly banquet, the wedding feast of the Lamb.
This hope infuses the act with joy. Even in the midst of suffering or sorrow, communion reminds believers that the story is not over. Christ has conquered death and His kingdom is coming. This forward looking aspect of the sacrament brings hope and inspires perseverance.
